When you think about writing an article that will generate attention for your business you may be like most businesses and think that you could never come up with something that others will want to read.

One of the best marketing tools for a business is to provide valuable information to your prospects.

You can share this information through conversations, speaking, writing all kinds of content, including articles, reports, newsletters, and blog posts.

In many ways, writing is the most potent as you can get written information out to your prospects quickly and inexpensively if you know what you are doing.

You can break articles into several categoriesPutting the pieces together

  1. Step-by-step. These are detailed, how-to articles that explain step-by-step how to do something. They can often be focused on solving a problem or issue.
  1. Specific number of tips. This gives an overview of a certain area of knowledge and gives specific tips that you can use to be more successful. “7 Tips to Generate More Leads.”
  1. List of before and after approaches. First approach is address what doesn’t work and why. The second approach is show how to make it work. This is related to the specific number of tips.
  1. Tips that is interspersed with short case studies. This is something you can do that works and here’s an example of someone who applied this successfully.
  1. Specific number of mistakes. This is the same thing in reverse. 7 Mistakes you are making in generating leads.
  1. Story or case study. Written from your own perspective, tell a story of how someone (you or a client) went from failure to success. The kind of articles get the biggest emotional response. Make it relatable to your audience.
  1. Resources. This is a list of useful resources or examples that may be of use to your audience, such as a list of the best websites or a list of ten great leadership books.
  1. Thought-piece. This is where you take an idea that interest you and you ponder it, bringing in examples, ideas from others and insights from your own experience. An article like this might start with a question: “Why do people buy something and then never use it?”
  1. Inspiration piece. This can be harder to write, as they need to be real and go deep. Think of something that inspires you that you can share with others.

Format or structure for article writing.

  1. Be clear to whom the article is for.
  1. In the opening paragraph talk about a problem, issue, or need. Show you understand their situation.
  1. In the next paragraph assure your audience that there is a solution to this issue and that you will address it.
  1. Write the body of your article, with your insights, ideas, tips, and case studies.
  1. Write a summary of the article.

When you write an article be clear on who your audience is, what they are looking to have solved, and what solutions you can provide. You do not want to provide the solution in the article but want them to see that you can provide the solution.
